The Official Booster Club of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
They call it the AHL's "family reunion," and it'll be based in Trumbull this weekend.
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers Booster Club will play host to the 53rd convention of the Association of American Hockey League Booster Clubs, Friday-Sunday at the Trumbull Marriott.
"We really do have a fantastic group of hockey fans that are very supportive of the Sound Tiger team," club president Debbie Lietuvninkas said. "Our board and some of our members have really stepped up to the plate and helped to plan this entire convention."
The convention is held every year on the weekend after Labor Day. The BSTBC is expecting over 200 people from around the continent.
The BSTBC has aspects of a fan club that you might expect, hosting a couple of dinners with the players every year, sending the players food for road trips.
It also raises money for various charities, donating over $160,000 over the years. The club plans to raise money at the convention for the P.T. Barnum Pediatric Center and for Bridgeport Rescue Mission, and they'll be making care packages for troops on Saturday.
Hosting the convention rotates through the member clubs, which include booster clubs for current teams as well as departed markets. Philadelphia is represented by two different clubs, one for the Phantoms, who left in 2009, and one for the Firebirds, a two-year league member in the late 1970s.
"It is fun to see our 'family' members at different arenas throughout the league," Lietuvninkas said. "Our bond is so strong that even booster club members that no longer have teams in their city continue to come to our convention."
"We are definitely looking forward to traveling to Chicago next year for the 54th annual AAHLBC convention."
Next year was supposed to be Bridgeport's, but the BSTBC stepped in for Providence this year.
It's coincidentally the second convention in Connecticut in a row. Springfield's booster club hosted at Bradley International Airport last year since the convention was up against the Basketball Hall of Fame's induction ceremony. New Haven hosted in 1994 in Mystic.
There are association meetings and dinners on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday's dinner features a costume contest with a circus theme.
This year's convention includes optional side trips like a visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York, a pub crawl in Milford and a trip to the Norwalk Oyster Festival on Sunday.
